Block Storage

Block Storage is a form of data storage in which so-called logical blocks of data are provided to servers or applications. The big difference is that block storage does not (yet) contain a file system and involves the storage of only the ‘raw’ data. You can best compare a logical piece of block storage (aka a LUN) to a new local disk that is accessible over a network. The best-known protocols are iSCSI and Fibre Channel. Nowadays, you also see many ‘software-defined’ solutions, but fundamentally they provide the same thing: logical blocks of storage, on which any file system can be created.
